We love showing our guests something interesting and special on our Road to Hana tour. Especially if it has been a part of Maui’s culture. That is why we love to point out this botanical garden in the beautiful upcountry area of Kula. This botanical garden has been around since the 1980’s and has recently been revived into a wonderful cafe and self guided walking tour.
Of the many flower farms and botanical tours in Maui it’s easy to find something that will nourish the botanist in you. Maui’s Enchanted Floral Garden along Kula Highway is fast becoming a popular upcountry stop whether you’re headed to the 10,000 ft summit at Haleakala National Park, enjoying a day upcountry or returning from doing the full loop tour around the island. It’s been dubbed “Maui’s best kept secret” as it’s diversity is one of the largest in the state but little known.
Upcountry Kula – Maui’s Enchanted Floral Garden
This 8 acre garden is loaded with over 2200 plant species of tropical and semi-tropical plants and flowers from around the world. The Hawaiian Garden area has many endemic plants including one of the largest Koa trees in the upcountry area. Located at the 2500’ elevation it is one of Maui’s most diverse horticultural treasures!
The Enchanted Floral Gardens were first planted by Horticulturalist Kazuo Takeda in the 1980’s. As a hybrid specialist for the Petunia trade in Japan Mr Takeda gathered plants and seeds from all over the world during his travels to plant in his Kula test garden. He published a book in the late 1980’s and opened his garden to the public around the same time. The number of plants and hybrids make this place one of the most diverse botanical gardens in all of Hawaiʻi! After a health crisis had him flying back and forth from Maui to Japan the gardens fell into disrepair so he sold it. The new owners struggled for years with the immense task of restoration until now.
I am sure both Anne and I would not have enjoyed this trip doing it ourselves.

I read up and decided not to drive. Best idea of the trip.
my wife convinced me that we might enjoy it more if we had a “guide”, she was right
Enter thru the cafe into this delightful upcountry garden. The Cafe serves it’s own brand of dark roasted coffee grown right here on the island. The Cafe is also offering farm fresh produce and various local made products. They serve coffee and lattes along with many local flavors of ice cream including several fresh & delicious pastries!
Sweet treats after a day circumnavigating Haleakala are always a welcome late afternoon ritual.
If you’re out exploring this beautiful area of Maui, possibly for sunrise at Haleakala, stop on by the cafe for seasonal soups, salads and sandwiches or choose from their farm fresh selection of island fruits and produce! In addition to all this they have a range of unique island products like sauces, preserves and dressings to name a few.
Enchanted Garden Fairy Houses
One of the fun things these gardens do for families is the Enchanted Fairy Village. Hidden (but easily findable) throughout the pathways are things like tiny doorways and magical houses that kids can search out and find. Dozens of these “Fairy” themed installments can be found throughout the gardens with around 40 more on the way…
Garden Wishing Tree
A tree at the back of the property has been designated as a place in which to write your inspirational wish and tie it to this tree. Your hopes and dreams will hang from the branches for years to come. Return with family and friends to start a Maui tradition all your own in this beautiful upcountry location!
