Rose RanchThe winery at Rose Ranch offers complimentary tastings to everyone who stops by. The tastings are experienced in the King's Cottage which was the guest cottage for visitors to the Rose Ranch and located on the front lawn. A frequent guest of the cottage, built specifically for him, was King Kalakaua. He entertained his guests by hosting parties and poker games while serving the finest champagnes. In the early years the Rose Ranch grew potatoes and corn for the California gold rush, and transitioned into sugar production by planting sugar cane. The sugar mill in Ulupalakua closed in 1883 and the ranch became a working cattle ranch. All over the property you can see the history of the area, from the vine covered sugar mill, the lava rock dairy now a fermentation plant for the winery, and even the old plantation jail now used as a private wine tasting room. In 1974 the Tedeschi winery was started with the planting of the first grape vines. The owners seeing that there was an abundance of other fruit, especially pineapples available on the island they decided to develop a pineapple wine, that first pineapple wine became Maui Blanc. Maui WineThe taste of Maui and the regional fruit of choice is definitely the pineapple. Like the Napa Valley in California, known for it's grapes and subsequent award winning wines, here in Hawaii we have our Maui Gold pineapples and with that we make a lot of things, including wine. Every great dish needs a complimentary drink to go with it and the winery has those wines. A Maui tour is not complete without a taste of something you have probably never tried before. Some of the wine is not made from grapes, but from our Maui Gold Pineapples. This fine wine can be sampled at the Tedeschi tasting cottage. One of our last stops on the Maui tour is to stop by this historical treasure for some wine tasting. Hula 0'Maui - Sparkling WineThis Maui wine was featured on Emeril's cooking show and for good reason. It's perfect with seafood or even a great substitute to champagne at brunch. In addition to pineapples there is grapefruit, green pear and zest of lime. Maui Blanc - Emil Tedeschi First Pineapple WineEnjoy this pineapple wine with a spicy meal of Indian or Thai food. White peach, ripe mango and sweet ripe pineapple mixed together in what they winery describes as a "silky texture". Maui SplashThis wine is filled with all my favorites, pineapple, peaches, mango and passion fruit. This aperitif wine is great for sunset picnics on the beach. Maui Winery TourA full tour of the winery is available at 10:30am and 1:30pm. Since Valley Isle Excursion arrives later in the day, after a full day of touring in Hana, we just don't have the time to do more then explore the area around the King's cottage tasting room. Coming back up to explore Kula and the do a Maui winery tour is something that you can use that rental car for. Our Road To Hana Tour
