Taro fields cover only a small portion of the Peninsula which once was a thriving hawaiian village.

The shore of Keanae peninsula was formed by lava so it is very jagged and full of tide pools to explore.

Ke'anae Peninsula on Maui

"Great tour. Lots of trivia and Historical info. 2nd road to Hana tour with this company. Both excursions were excellent and different at the same time."
--- Barbara Rybczynsky

The Ke'anae Peninsula with it's old stone church is the only building that survived a Tsunami in 1947.

The Ke'anae Peninsula, created from an immense lava flow from Haleakala Crater, provides home for a few local residents, taro fields, great fishing, and great photo opportunities for powerful waves crashing against black, jagged, lava rocks.

Valley Isle Excursions, Inc. takes you on one of the most breathtaking drives on earth through Maui's tropical rainforest. 52 miles, 617 curves, 56 one lane bridges, pineapple fields, spectacular cliffs, bamboo jungles, waterfalls, tropical streams and pools, colorful and fragrant island flowers and rainforest vegetation are all to be enjoyed on your way to "Heavenly Hana".

In hawaiian language the old stone church is called Ihi'ihio Iehowa o na Kaua church. It was built in 1856 and is the sole surviving building on the Keanae Peninsula of the April 1st 1946 tsunami. That tsunami generated by an earthquake in the Aleutian island chain off the coast of Alaska was registered as an 8.6 on the richter scale.

The waves that hit Maui Island, Hawaii topped 35 feet or 12 meters but near the epicenter tsunami waves topped 35 meters, over 100 feet. At the time there was no tsunami warning system in the Pacific so Hawaii was caught completely unaware. On Maui island alone, 20 children and 4 teachers lost their lives, a huge loss for a village as small has Keanae.

In response to this event the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was developed and headquartered in Hawaii.
