That tsunami generated by an earthquake in the Aleutian island chain off the coast of Alaska was registered as an 8.6 on the richter scale. The waves that hit Maui Island, Hawaii topped 35 feet or 12 meters but near the epicenter tsunami waves topped 35 meters, over 100 feet. At the time there was no tsunami warning system in the Pacific so Hawaii was caught completely unaware. On Maui island alone, 20 children and 4 teachers lost their lives, a huge loss for a village as small has Keanae. In response to this event the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was developed and headquartered in Hawaii. |
